Originally, washing machines were hand operated. They consisted of a tub on a wooden or metal frame with a mangle or other rotating tool. The mangle was used to squeeze out excess water and to smooth out wet clothing. After washing, the clothes were hung on a clothesline.

In the 19th century, inventors began developing hand operated washing machines. They were made from wood or metal, and tended to be small and portable. Most were modeled Hand Operated Washing Machines  after washboards. The early machines were hand operated, though later models were electrically powered. The first patent for a hand operated washing machine was issued in the year 1805.

Hand operated washing machines are available both in the home and on camping trips. They are also very convenient for people living in remote areas. They require minimal physical effort to use, and they save energy. They also clean clothes just as well as electric machines. They are often less expensive and are available in stores and online. However, they do require a water source and detergent, so they are not suitable for every household. They also have a lower capacity than most domestic washing machines.

Hand operated washing machines can be either hand-cranked or operated with a pedal. A hand cranked machine is a good choice if you are planning to wash a large load of clothes. If you are planning to wash a smaller load, a pedal machine is a better choice. In addition to washing, a pedal machine can also be used for rinsing and drying. They tend to be smaller and less expensive than electric models.

The first hand operated washing machine used a dolly-type machine that looked like an upside down milkmaid's stool. It was a manual machine that was tued on a two-handled lever. A family of four might use a hand operated washing machine for washing and drying. A typical load would include a pair of jeans, a pair of socks, and a shirt.

A more advanced machine was the underwater agitator type. It had a vertical shaft and four blades at the bottom of the tub. The machine would rotate, driving water through the fabric. The machine was not very effective until it had a reversible motion. It was not competitive until the late 1800s.

Another type of hand operated washing machine used a horizontal rotary cylinder. The machine had a tub inside a cylinder that contained clothing. The cylinder would rotate and raise the clothes as it tued. The cylinder was heated beneath the tub by a fire. This concept carried over to the clothes dryers of the day.

A few years later, a mangle was introduced that could be electrically powered. The mangle was a small device that could be twisted to compress wet clothes and expel excess water. The mangle also worked faster than a twisting hand.

A new concept was to move away from rubbing. A machine that could force water through multiple clothes at one time was a major conceptual breakthrough. The concept was not fully developed until the late 1800s.
